Get to know the Cholinesterase kit: Ebram's New Biochemical Line Reagent

The cholinesterase test is not a routine test carried out in all clinical analysis laboratories, but it is widely used in laboratories in agricultural regions, since the main function of this test is to diagnose and monitor pesticide poisoning. By measuring cholinesterase in the blood, it is possible to assess the patient's degree of exposure to organophosphates, and thus guarantee the health of rural workers, since excessive exposure can cause serious and even fatal symptoms.

What is Cholinesterase and its Function in the Body?

Cholinesterase is an enzyme responsible for degrading acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is crucial for the transmission of nerve impulses and for controlling muscle contraction. Its main function is to interrupt nerve signals as soon as they are transmitted, preventing continuous stimuli that can cause muscle spasms or hyperactivity.

Normal levels of cholinesterase in the body vary between 4,000 to 12,600 U/LIts activity is essential for neuromuscular balance.

When is the Cholinesterase Test indicated?

The kit Quimicoli - Cholinesterase is mainly used for:

  • Diagnosis and monitoring of pesticide poisoning: assesses the degree of exposure to organophosphates, which inhibit cholinesterase, resulting in the accumulation of acetylcholine, which can cause severe and even fatal symptoms.

But it can also be used for

  • Follow-up of patients undergoing anesthesia with succinylcholine: muscle relaxant that interferes with cholinesterase activity.
  • Liver function monitoring: Reduced cholinesterase activity is associated with serious liver conditions such as severe hepatitis or cirrhosis.

Characteristics of the Quimicoli - Cholinesterase kit

  • Methodology: Enzymatic.
  • Presentation: R1 1x25mL + R2 1x5mL.
  • Purpose: Quantitative determination of pseudocholinesterase (cholinesterase II) in human serum and plasma.
  • Determination of pseudocholinesterase - There are two classes of cholinesterase that can determine the concentration of cholinesterase in serum, Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and Pseudocholinesterase (PChE). The kit's methodology opted to quantify only Pseudocholinesterase (PChE), as Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) shows a lot of interference in hemolyzed samples.

With the launch of the Quimicoli - CholinesteraseEbram reaffirms its commitment to expanding its biochemistry range, offering another quality reagent to meet the demands of clinical analysis laboratories.
