Major Cardiovascular Diseases in Brazil: Understanding the Risks, Management, and Importance of Screenings

Cardiovascular diseases are among the major public health challenges in Brazil and around the world. They involve conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels and can progress silently for years before leading to serious events, such as heart attacks and strokes.

In Brazil, cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of death. Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that these diseases account for approximately 400,000 deaths per year in the country, underscoring the importance of prevention, diagnosis, and monitoring of cardiovascular risk factors.

Given this situation, understanding how the cardiovascular system works, being familiar with the main diseases, and monitoring risk factors are essential for prevention and management.

What are the main cardiovascular diseases?

Cardiovascular diseases are not a single condition. The group includes various diseases that can affect the heart or blood vessels.

1. High blood pressure

It is a particularly important condition because it can remain asymptomatic for a long time. When left uncontrolled, it increases the risk of complications such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

Because high blood pressure is often asymptomatic, regular blood pressure monitoring is essential for identifying changes.

2. Coronary artery disease and heart attack

Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle are compromised, usually due to the formation and progression of atherosclerotic plaques.

When blood flow to the heart is significantly reduced or interrupted, the following may occur: acute myocardial infarction.

Factors associated with this condition include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being overweight, a sedentary lifestyle, and family history.

In cases of suspected heart damage, laboratory tests can aid in the patient’s evaluation. Markers such as troponin and CK-MB are used to investigate heart muscle damage, always in conjunction with clinical evaluation and other tests.

3. Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to a region of the brain is interrupted or when bleeding occurs inside or around the brain.

In an ischemic stroke, the interruption is caused by a blocked blood vessel. In a hemorrhagic stroke, on the other hand, a blood vessel ruptures.

Among the main associated factors are high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, being overweight, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and advanced age.

Controlling these factors is one of the key strategies for reducing the risk of occurrence.

4. Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.

It may be associated with various cardiovascular diseases, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and heart valve disorders.

Ongoing monitoring is important for identifying changes, managing associated factors, and tracking the progression of the condition.

5. Cardiac arrhythmias

Arrhythmias are abnormalities in the heart's rhythm. The heart may beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly.

Some arrhythmias are benign, while others can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. Atrial fibrillation, for example, is associated with an increased risk of stroke.

The evaluation may include a clinical assessment, an electrocardiogram, heart rhythm monitoring, and other tests, depending on each patient's needs.

What are the main cardiovascular risk factors?

The development of cardiovascular diseases is linked to a combination of genetic, metabolic, behavioral, and environmental factors.

Among the main ones are:

  • High blood pressure;
  • High cholesterol and other lipids;
  • Diabetes and high blood sugar;
  • Overweight and obesity;
  • Smoking;
  • Sedentary lifestyle;
  • Inadequate nutrition;
  • Excessive alcohol consumption;
  • Family history;
  • Age;
  • Stress and other lifestyle-related factors.

The WHO points out that changes in the blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids, and body weight They serve as important indicators of cardiovascular risk and can be monitored through health care services.

This monitoring is important because many of these factors can be identified before a cardiovascular event occurs.

Ebram and Cardiovascular Monitoring

Managing cardiovascular diseases requires a comprehensive view of the various factors that can influence heart and blood vessel health.

In this context, laboratory tests play an important role in identifying metabolic abnormalities, monitoring risk factors, and investigating cardiovascular events.

Ebram uses reagents from Biochemistry Track, Turbidimetry e Quick Tests that can be used to assess cardiovascular health.

For the lipid profile, reagents are available for Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides e HDL cholesterol. As for the cardiac profile, Ebram provides CK Total, CK-MB, Troponin I e Ultra-Sensitive PCR.

These are different markers, with different applications, that are part of cardiovascular monitoring and research strategies.

A Ebram It offers reagents for various tests related to cardiovascular health, supporting the work of healthcare professionals and the performance of the tests that are part of this monitoring process.
