Liver Profile: Laboratory Evaluation of Liver and Biliary Function

The liver performs vital metabolic functions in the synthesis of proteins and the clearance of toxic substances from the body. Alterations in its activity can indicate liver disease or metabolic disorders that compromise its entire functioning.

The liver profile, also known as a hepatogram, is a set of laboratory tests that are essential for assessing the integrity of the liver and bile ducts. It is used for diagnosis, follow-up and therapeutic monitoring of conditions such as hepatitis, hepatic steatosis, cirrhosis and drug intoxication.

The main biochemical markers:

ALT/TGP e AST/TGO: Enzymes indicating liver damage or inflammation.

Alkaline phosphatase: Indicates obstruction of the bile ducts. Increased levels suggest hepatobiliary disorders or liver infiltration.

Gama GT: Sensitive marker of cholestasis and excessive alcohol consumption, often used in association with alkaline phosphatase to clarify the origin of liver alterations.

Bilirubin Total e Direct: Elevated levels may indicate liver dysfunction, biliary obstruction or hemolysis.

Albumin: Reductions in its concentration suggest a decline in the hepatic synthesis function.

Total Protein: Expresses the sum of plasma proteins, reflecting the functional state of the liver.

Prothrombin time: It measures blood clotting capacity, which is directly related to the liver's production of clotting factors. A prolonged PT indicates impaired synthetic liver function.

The combined analysis of these markers allows for a comprehensive assessment of liver status, identifying everything from discrete alterations to serious dysfunctions, and they are therefore indispensable in clinical monitoring and in making therapeutic decisions

Monitoring these parameters is essential for diagnosing and controlling diseases affecting the liver and bile ducts.

Ebram offers a complete portfolio of reagents for the main laboratory profiles.
